Before BEST BEFORE, there was a question about the time we have left. Then a message, a conversation, and a summer of making something that could live—and end.

A guide to opening a work, living with it, and understanding what stays.
Looking doesn’t start the clock.Create a new child inscription with your SEALED BEST BEFORE piece as its parent. You can do this through inscribe.dev: connect the wallet holding your piece, choose your child’s content, and set your piece’s inscription ID as the Parent Inscription. Once that child is confirmed on Bitcoin, the work opens and its clock starts.
No. Creating a valid child requires control of the parent inscription’s wallet. Knowing a piece’s number or inscription ID is not enough. As the holder of a SEALED piece, you choose when to activate it.
Yes. There is no activation deadline. A work can stay SEALED for years, or indefinitely. Its lifespan begins at activation, not when it was first inscribed or when you bought it.
No. Opening this viewer, saving an image, buying a piece or sending it to another wallet does not start its clock. The first confirmed child inscription made with that piece as its parent is what activates it.
The first activating child is the work’s Key. Its content is your choice: a message, an image, something personal. A valid parent–child relationship is what matters for activation. These Keys form a separate, community-built part of the collection’s story.
The child needs to confirm on Bitcoin, and the viewer needs to receive the updated chain data. Check that the child lists your exact BEST BEFORE inscription as its parent, then refresh after confirmation. If you’re unsure, ask Lemonhaze on X or the Discord before creating another inscription.
Creating the child inscription requires Bitcoin network fees and may involve a service fee. The amount depends on the file, fee rate and service. Review the total in the inscription tool before confirming.
No. Activation derives the work’s visual seed and lifespan from its own inscription ID, the first child’s ID and the block that confirms that child. You choose to begin; the final image and expiry are revealed when it opens.
At least 2,016 Bitcoin blocks—roughly two weeks. Some lives are short; others span decades. The designed distribution has roughly a quarter expiring within a month and about half within three years. Calendar times are estimates; the expiry block is what counts.
A small chance at activation gives a work no expiry. It remains alive without an end block. The final number of immortals is not fixed in advance and cannot be known while works remain sealed.
No. Closing the browser, changing owners or adding another child does not reset the original activation or expiry. Once opened, its life follows Bitcoin’s blocks.
The live artwork gives way to its EXPIRED state. The inscription and its history remain on Bitcoin; expiry does not delete them or remove the work from your wallet.
Yes. Time is measured by Bitcoin’s block height, not by visits or screen time. A block takes about ten minutes on average, so dates and years shown here are estimates.
Yes. Open a work and use Save PNG once it has rendered. For an OPEN work, Record MP4 is available in supported browsers. These are records of a moment; saving one does not stop the live work’s clock.
Use Solo or Exhibition view to give the live artwork more room, including fullscreen. A public activation can be part of an exhibition; the clock starts with the confirmed Key, so allow for Bitcoin confirmation time. Explore Exhibition & performance for ideas.
Ask Lemonhaze on X or the Discord about activation, your piece or a possible exhibition. For creating a child inscription, use inscribe.dev. Share the work’s number or inscription ID so we can find it.
