EXHIBITION & PERFORMANCE

The opening.
The life.
The last block.

What happens when a work’s entire life becomes an exhibition? A possibility for galleries, museums, collectors—and everyone who comes to witness it.

During its life · a painting measured in blocks

Let the work set the duration.

A gallery could commit to keeping a work on display for its entire life. Weeks, years, perhaps decades. The institution’s promise becomes part of the performance.

POSSIBLE WAYS TO SHOW THE WORK

Time is part
of the exhibition.

These possibilities began in the artists’ conversation. Each leaves room for the collector, the institution and the audience to shape what comes next.

01

A public unsealing

Make activation the event. One work or many, revealed in front of an audience, with each lifespan unknown until it begins.

02

A gallery commitment

Keep the work on display until it expires. A promise whose duration the institution cannot choose in advance.

03

A museum’s stewardship

If an immortal emerges, imagine a museum committing to its ongoing care. An open-ended life, and an open-ended responsibility.

04

A closing gathering

Return for the finale. Mark the end of the living image, and the time spent in its company.

FOR A FUTURE PRESENTATION

The live work is the centre of the display. A portrait screen, room to stand with it, and its remaining blocks beside it. The act of looking becomes an awareness of time.
